Organized Hockey Volunteer Commitment

Twig Amateur Hockey Association is a volunteer-run organization, and every family plays an important role in making our outdoor hockey program possible.

As part of our organized hockey program, each family is asked to submit three volunteer assessment checks at the beginning of the season:

  • Concessions Assessment: $200
  • Initial Flooding Assessment: $200
  • In-Season Rink Maintenance Assessment: $400

All checks should be made payable to TAHA and dated February 1 of the following year.

Assessment checks are not cashed as long as your family's volunteer commitments are completed. Once a volunteer requirement has been fulfilled, the corresponding assessment check will be voided and securely destroyed.

This system helps ensure every family contributes to the success of our outdoor rink and community-led hockey program through volunteer service or financial support.

๐Ÿงƒ Concessions Assessment โ€“ $200

Help support the operation of Twig's concession stand throughout the hockey season.

To fulfill this commitment, each family must complete three concession shifts during the season.

๐Ÿ’ง Initial Flooding Assessment โ€“ $200

Help create the foundation of the season by building the first layers of ice.

Each family is expected to contribute four hours during the initial flooding period.

Initial flooding typically takes place during a 48โ€“72 hour window within a couple of weeks after Thanksgiving, depending entirely on weather conditions.

Because flooding must occur when temperatures allow, volunteer shifts are often scheduled on short notice and may take place on weekdays.

Families with unavoidable scheduling conflicts should contact the Rink Director or TAHA President to discuss alternative arrangements.

โ„๏ธ In-Season Rink Maintenance Assessment โ€“ $400

Help maintain safe, high-quality ice throughout the season.

Families select weekly flooding and ice maintenance shifts that are typically 3 hoursย in length and begin at 9:00PMย  Maintenance nights are Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.ย  Additionally, there are snow clearing only options on Saturday and Sunday. To fulfill this commitment, families must attend at least 75% of their scheduled shifts.

Because the outdoor season is weather-dependent and may end unexpectedly, families are encouraged to participate early rather than waiting until the end of the season.

๐Ÿงค Jamboree & Twig Days Volunteer Requirements

In addition to the volunteer assessments above, each Twig team is expected to provide volunteers during its assigned home tournament or jamboree, as well as the annual Twig Days celebration.

These events are important fundraisers and community traditions that rely on the participation of Twig families. Volunteer assignments are coordinated at the team level and may include a variety of responsibilities throughout the event.

Volunteer roles may include:

  • Concessions โ€“ selling snacks, beverages, and meal items
  • Snow Removal โ€“ clearing walkways and rink surfaces as needed
  • Zamboni Driver โ€“ preparing and maintaining the ice surface between games
  • Scorekeeping & Timekeeping โ€“ operating the scoreboard and recording game details
  • General Support โ€“ setup, cleanup, merchandise, parking, trash removal, and other event needs

๐ŸงŠ Flooding & Ice Maintenance Overview

Flooding and ice maintenance are essential to keeping the Twig outdoor rink safe, playable, and in excellent condition throughout the season.

Volunteer shifts may include a variety of tasks depending on weather, ice conditions, and current needs, including:

  • Snow removal using shovels, tractors, or other equipment
  • Flooding the rink with hoses to build fresh layers of ice
  • Operating the mop or mop cart to smooth the ice surface
  • General rink maintenance and other tasks as needed

Every shift is led by a Flood Captain, who provides direction based on current weather and ice conditions.

No prior experience is necessary. Volunteers should dress for working outdoors in winter conditions and be ready to help wherever needed.
