Assessments
Twig Amateur Hockey Association requires each family to submit three separate assessment checks at the start of the season to support essential volunteer-based operations: concessions, initial flooding, and in-season rink maintenance. Each check should be made payable to TAHA and dated for February 1 of the following year. These checks are only cashed if the associated volunteer requirement is not fulfilled. If your family completes the requirement for a given assessment, that check will be voided and securely destroyed. This system ensures that all families contribute to the success of our outdoor rink and community-led program, either through volunteer time or financial support.
🧃 Concessions Assessment – $200
This assessment supports staffing of the Twig concession stand. To fulfill this requirement, each family must complete four concession shifts during the season.
💧 Initial Flooding Assessment – $200
This assessment supports the critical 48–72 hour flooding period required to establish the base ice at the start of the season. Each family is expected to contribute 4 hours of volunteer time during this initial flood.
The flooding typically takes place between December 1 and December 15, depending on weather. Because timing is determined by conditions, the flooding may be scheduled on short notice and are not guaranteed to fall on a weekend. Volunteer shifts are scheduled between 2:00 PM and 10:00 PM during the 2-3 day flooding window.
Due to the importance of this task and the unpredictable timing, families with unavoidable conflicts should contact the Rink Director or TAHA President to discuss alternate options for fulfilling this requirement.
❄️ In-Season Rink Maintenance Assessment – $400
This assessment supports ongoing ice maintenance throughout the season. Each family is expected to participate in weekly flooding shifts, which are typically 2-3 hours in length. To fulfill this requirement, families must attend at least 75% of the scheduled weekly shifts.
Because the outdoor season is weather-dependent and may end earlier than expected, families are encouraged to participate early and consistently—don’t wait until the end of the season to start showing up!
🧤 Jamboree & Twig Days Volunteer Requirements
Each Twig team is responsible for volunteering during their assigned home tournament/jamboree and the annual Twig Days event. These events are key fundraisers and help showcase the spirit of our hockey community — and they only succeed with strong association support.
Required Volunteer Roles:
Families will be expected to fill various shift-based roles, including:
- Concessions – selling snacks, beverages, and meal items
- Snow Removal – clearing walkways and rink surfaces if snowing
- Zamboni Driver – prepping and maintaining the ice surface between games
- Scorekeeping & Timekeeping – operating the scoreboard and recording game details
- General Support – setup, cleanup, trash, merchandise, parking, and other needs as assigned
🧊 Flooding & Ice Maintenance Overview
Flooding and ice maintenance are essential to keeping the Twig outdoor rink in top condition throughout the season. Volunteer shifts may include a variety of tasks depending on weather, ice conditions, and current needs. Responsibilities typically include:
- Snow removal using shovels, tractors, or other equipment
- Hose flooding to build fresh layers of ice
- Dragging the mop or mop cart to smooth the surface
- Miscellaneous maintenance tasks
Each shift is coordinated by a Flood Captain who will provide direction based on conditions that day. Volunteers should come prepared to work outdoors in cold weather and be ready to assist with whichever tasks are needed to maintain a safe and skate-ready surface for all players.
